Ready. Set. Go!

Summer is almost upon us. The days are longer and the weather is getting better. so what better time than to dig out those trainers that have been collecting dust and start running.

Conquering that first mile might seem scary at first but whatever your reason for getting out there, whether it be for fitness, weight-loss or the undeniable mental-health benefits, applaud yourself. Running is tough but it is also one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself, so take it slow and make it small to start with and see where your journey can lead.

When I started my running journey, I had no idea where it would take me. As the mum of two young children I was time-poor and struggling to lose the baby belly after giving birth. I'd never been much of a runner either, it all seemed like far too much hard work and too much exertion but...it was something that could fit in around my schedule of work and motherhood and it did get me out of the house and once I did there was no stopping me.

From those first tentative miles almost 15 years ago, I have now completed countless marathons, 1/2 marathons and 10K events, dropped at least a dress size and have a wonderful and healthy outlet to let off steam at the end of the day if I need to.

So yes, I run regularly and I like to go far, sometimes, but it's not all about the distances and getting medals; it's about a lifestyle. I hope that for those of you out there reading my blog, it serves as a source of inspiration and provides useful advice to all you middle-aged mums and beyond, that running in whatever form you do it can be incredibly rewarding and fun.
